Trap Fear

Ancestral Panic
Snow buries Buck in his sleeping hole, triggering a fear of entrapment that his civilized experience cannot explain.
Body before Reason
His muscles contract and his hair rises before conscious memory returns. Instinct reaches backward through generations.
Escape into Awareness
Buck bursts from the snow and recognizes the camp. The episode shows that fear can be inherited as a bodily readiness rather than learned through personal experience.
Fear of Madness

A New Horror
Dolly suddenly becomes rabid and pursues Buck with relentless, irrational violence.
Flight without Combat
Buck does not attempt to defeat her because madness makes ordinary dominance meaningless. Terror gives him speed while stripping away his usual deliberation.
Rescue by Francois
Francois kills Dolly with an axe as Buck passes. The incident teaches Buck that survival sometimes depends on another’s timely intervention.
Fear Reassigned

Humans Become Prey
Buck examines the bodies of the Yeehats and realizes that men are physically weaker than he had believed.
Residual Caution
He still fears arrows, spears, and clubs, because technology remains dangerous. But the human body no longer represents an inherently superior enemy.
The New Terror
The Yeehats now fear Buck and avoid his valley. Fear has crossed from the hunted animal to the human community that once imposed it.
